Rajkiya Institute of Open Schooling, Lucknow, Uttar Pardesh was established on 1st December, 1986. Earlier, the Regional Centre, Lucknow was looking after whole of Uttar Pradesh but with the creation of new state of Uttarakhand and expansion and decentralization of various activities, new Regional Centres at Aligarh, Varanasi, Dehradun and Noida were established and districts from the jurisdiction of Regional Centre, Lucknow were transferred to these Regional Centres. Even after such divisions, Regional Centre, Lucknow is still one of the largest Regional Centres in terms of jurisdiction and enrollment of learners.
Rajkiya Institute of Open Schooling, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh commenced its functioning with a single study centre under its supervision in Lucknow. Since its inception, the institute has been committed to providing flexible and accessible education to learners across the state. In 1987, the institute began a major expansion, establishing additional study centres in prominent cities such as Allahabad, Agra, Bareilly, Dehradun, Kanpur, Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Sultanpur, and Haldwani. Over the next decade, the number of Learner Support Centres increased steadily, reaching 50 by the year 2000.
The institute focuses on delivering quality education through distance learning, catering to students who are unable to attend regular schools due to various reasons, including employment, relocation, or personal circumstances. Its curriculum is designed to be comprehensive, yet flexible, ensuring learners receive the necessary academic support along with practical guidance. Today, Rajkiya Institute of Open Schooling has become a pivotal institution for secondary and senior secondary education in Uttar Pradesh, fostering academic growth and enabling learners to achieve their educational goals, regardless of geographical or social constraints.
