About RIOS
Rajkiya Institute of Open Schooling (RIOS), Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh was established on 1st December, 1986 as a pioneering initiative of the Government of Uttar Pradesh to provide inclusive, flexible, and quality education to learners who are unable to pursue regular schooling. Over the decades, RIOS has emerged as a beacon of opportunity for students across the state, empowering them to continue education without barriers of age, time, or location.
Initially, RIOS started with a single study centre in Lucknow. However, with its growing popularity and demand, the institute expanded rapidly to major cities including Allahabad, Agra, Bareilly, Dehradun, Kanpur, Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Sultanpur, and Haldwani. By the year 2000, more than 50 Learner Support Centres were established, making RIOS one of the most accessible and learner-friendly open schooling networks in the region.
After the formation of the state of Uttarakhand and subsequent decentralization, new regional centres were opened in Aligarh, Varanasi, Dehradun, and Noida. Despite these divisions, the Lucknow Regional Centre remains one of the largest and most active in terms of learner enrollment and jurisdiction coverage.
The institute follows a learner-centric model based on flexibility, inclusivity, and digital innovation. RIOS promotes education through distance mode while maintaining a strong emphasis on skill development, vocational training, and digital literacy. The curriculum and teaching methodology are aligned with the evolving needs of society, encouraging lifelong learning for all.
